A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another—most often a physical variable such as pressure or temperature into a proportional electrical signal your control system can interpret.

Inside the sensing element, changes in pressure or temperature affect the element; integrated electronics instantly translate that change into an analog or digital output. The result is real-time data you can use for monitoring, closed-loop control, alarms, or trend analysis.

Typical applications include hydraulic power units, pneumatic circuits, HVAC chillers, industrial wash-down equipment, and process-control skids—anywhere a machine or PLC needs continuous feedback on system pressure or temperature to operate or stay safe.

Engineers often group them by the quantity measured (pressure, temperature, force, flow, etc.) or by the sensing principle (piezoresistive, piezoelectric, capacitive, inductive). Nason specializes in pressure and temperature transducers, both of which employ piezoresistive technology for high accuracy and long-term reliability.

Piezoelectric elements generate a voltage only while they are being stressed, so they excel at dynamic or vibration measurements but are not ideal for true static pressure. Piezoresistive elements, on the other hand, change electrical resistance in direct proportion to applied load, providing a stable DC signal suitable for steady-state pressure or temperature monitoring.

1. Define the range (vacuum, low, or high pressure / expected temperature span).
2. Choose the media connection (NPT, SAE, BSPP, BSPT, custom).
3. Select the output (4-20 mA, 0-10 V, CAN, or discrete switch).
4. Choose the electrical connector (Packard, Deutsch, M12, cable leads).
5. Match the medium (fluid compatibility and wetted-material requirements).
6. Confirm accuracy & stability (±1%,  ±0.4%, ±0.25%).
7. Check environmental ratings (IP/NEMA, shock, vibration, EMC).

• Sensor – the raw sensing element (e.g., strain-gauge bridge or thermistor).
• Transducer – sensor plus signal-conditioning electronics that output a scaled electrical signal (voltage, current, digital).
• Transmitter – a transducer packaged to send the signal over long distances or networks, often with additional isolation, amplification, or protocol conversion.
